Lincoln's Gettysburg Address

New York; (1917): The Abingdon Press. First Edition. Small Octavo. Item #032779

116 pages, illustrated. There have always been some questions about the five known early copies of the Gettysburg Address (Bliss, Nicolay, Hay, Evertt, and Bancroft). In 1917 the copy of Clara Hay had appeared and was stolen though Helen Nicolay claimed it was her copy, The Hay copy which was known appears here (see following pages after page 96, Martin P. Johnson said that was the earliest photograph he had seen, Clarence Hay had claimed his sisters had two copies. Carmichael, who was in contact with Clarence Hay at the time claims the two manuscripts had been bound into a carefully bound book. This copy belonged to Rev, Franklin Ellsworth Taylor, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Gettysburg who was also involved in the search (Brookland Eagle, April 28, 1917, p. 8), A very nice copy bound in blue cloth lettered in gilt centrally stamped in gilt, spine lettering gilt and top edge gilt, light fading and wear to spine and spine ends. With Rev. Taylor's gift inscription on front pastedown.
