A History of the Sixth Regiment Field Artillery, First Division, United States Army

[Coblenz, Germany: Gorres-Duckerei, 1919]. Octavo. Item #032613

200 pages. illustrations, color coat of arms, maps (one folding), music, portraits. "In compiling this history of the 6th Field Artillery, it is merely intended to gather all available data present and put it into a printed form for the benefit of those who are soon to leave our midst and return to civil pursuits, but who will always treasure the memory of their service in the regiment and the First Division. The object is therefore one of a recounting of the deeds of the regiment to make these memories even more vivid in times to come". This very scarce book was published in Coblenz, Germany to remind is members and their families of what they had gone through. Stephen J. Lofgen in 1992 in his article: "Unready for War: the Army and World War I" that because of their large size the American divisions in France covered 500 square-kilometer areas. This made communication and training very difficult. He notes that the artillerymen became quite familiar during the confusion with the French artillery pieces. They built the barbed wire and many were killed. In this book the same reference pages 24-28 show where this took place and a former officer notes in ink the exact location of pages 27 and 28. laid in is a carbon copy of notes made by John B. Tipton on various pages from p. 21 to 150 and 171 who corrects the omission of his middle initial where he received the C.D.Q. citation for his service on the Meuse-Argonne campaign. Bound in black cloth stamped in gilt, spine plain, decorative gold foil endpapers, chipping and small tear to spine ends, light wear to corners, rear inner hinge starting, between pages 144 and 145 there was a page torn out leaving evidence at the gutter but not belonging to this book and an old repair to the gutter of p. 48 and 49 The text was in German. Overall, a very good copy.
