Limited to 574 cloth bound edition reprinted from the 1931 edition. 264 pages. index. Illustrated and with a large folding map. Leaving his home in Belleville, Illinois in 1838, Baker set out to join Jim Bridger who was recruiting a company of trappers for the American Fur Company. While showing his courage in fights against the trappers by Sioux, Arapaho, and Cheyenne, he survived to lead the trappers. Baker spent sixty years in the mountains. In 1855 he became chief of scouts for General W.S. Harney at Fort Laramie. He attired himself in the native garb of Indians who lived his rugged outdoor life to the age of 80, when he passed away. Bound in yellow cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt blocked in maroon. A fine copy in clear acetate dust jacket (original?).
