Republic or Empire? The Philippine Question

Chicago: Independence Company, 1899. First Edition. Octavo. Item #031968

Portrait frontispiece, 762 pages, illustrated with portraits of leading political and intellectuals with their facsimile autographs. "In order to place before the public the best arguments thus far produced against the adoption of a colonial policy, the publishers have collected and herewith present the views of the most eminent men of the nation representing all parties.", Bryan's argument against colonialism was also echoed by the following writers in this book, including Andrew Carnegie, Samuel Gompers, David Starr Jorden, and a host of others. Teddy Roosevelt, of course, considered these as weaklings. This is a major work and few copies survived in good condition. Bound in 3/4leather over green cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt, decorative endpapers, all edges marbled, previous owner's name, another name rubbed out, some rubbing to edges, small stain to corners of frontispiece and title page, corners lightly bent. A very nice copy.
