. 55(1) pp., illustrated with 17 plates in color and in black and white. It is well known that the signs used in writing the Egyptian language were originally pictures representing concrete things in the life and landscape of Egypt. The items chosen are usually present in the best writing--birds and beasts and objects of daily use. The artist who also did the magnificent Egyptian paintings for the University of Chicago has provided one of the best guides on understanding the art and meaning in early Egypt. Bound in black cloth, spine lettering white, 3 small corners bumped, in an unclipped black and white pictorial dust jacket lettered and decorated in black and white, corners lightly worn wear to spine ends and a small nick to spine affecting the N and G in word writing. A very good copy.
