Renan's frustration about the archaeological treasures buried under the modern town although on occasion some of these treasures did come to the surface. On page 15, it was announced that the results of the exploration of Cypress would be included within this volume but in fact the work exceeded their expectations in scope and will form a separate work at a later date. An unusually nice copy bound in red cloth, spine lettered in gilt blocked in black(lightly rubbed). very nicely printed in Beirut. Long gift inscription on the front free endpaper to John Sussome Haleb el Kahany Pfarre (?) from (?).
