Taos Mosaic: Portrait of a New Mexico Village. (Signed by the Author and photographer Laura Gilpin)

Albuquerque; (1973): University of New Mexico Press. First Edition. Small Quarto. Item #031815

176 pages, index, 37 photographs mostly by Laura Gilpin, who has also signed the book along with the author. Morrill has made a substantial contribution to the study of northern New Mexico, with a focus on Taos. The accomplishment of presenting a view of Taos in its entirety is certainly one of the successes of Claire Morrill's book. Besides Gilpin's photographs of Frank Waters, Dennis Hopper, Mable Dodge Luhan. Claire Morrill was a well-known antiquarian bookseller herself but her chapter 3 "The Indispensable Bookman" tells the story of John Andres Romero, a Taos Indian who was an expert moccasin maker who spoke three languages but could neither read or write with proficiency yet he often found rare Western Americana, a Gauguin monograph or unusual books on Ute and Navajo cradle boards, dye rugs, and Claire Morrill merged since going to the shop. The best book to understand the unique culture of Taos. A near fine copy bound in cream cloth lettered in black, spine lettering black, just a bit of toning to edges, in a very good unclipped pictorial dust jacket with small edge tear to front panel, some rubbing or finger soiling to rear panel. A very nice copy.

Price: $115.00
