Eleusis: Die Batugeschichtliche Entwicklung Des Heilitumes [Volume I] and Eleusis: Tafein (Volume II)
Berlin: Walter De Gruyter and Co., 1927. Quarto. Item #031427
Two volume set, [German text] with contributions by J. Kirchner, A. Korte and A.K. Orlandos. The text volume, 333 pages, with the plate [Tafein] volume having 44 plates and 112 textual illustrations. The author developed a major understanding of the architectural state of the sanctuary for the German archaeological institute at Athens. At the beginning of the seventh century, a temple was built to the Earth goddess on the rock above the cave. The absorption of Eleusis by Athens is reflected in the building of the first Hall of the Mysteries and its surrounding wall, and of a small shrine to Pluto. Both informative on the state of Greek architecture and religion, this work remains a classic. Text volume bound in tan cloth lettered in dark brown, spine lettering dark brown, the plate volume is heavy card stock chemise. A fine set.
