John Campbell began writing histories in 1719 but it was this major work which became the major work of the rise of the British fleet, and with a continuation down to the year 1779, including the naval transactions of the late war, and an account of the recent discoveries in the southern hemisphere ; written under the inspection of Doctor Berkenhout. Uniformly bound in a newer 1/4 calf over beige cloth, raised bands with compartments lettered in gilt, endpapers renewed, tiny chip to head of volume two. A very nice, clean set lacking only one frontispiece in volume four.
