Los Angeles; 1929-1931: Cactus and Succulent Society of America. Small Quarto. Item #031009

Volume 1 number 1-July 1929-June 1930, 260pp. Volume 2 number 1: July 1930- June 1931, 504pp. Both volumes are illustrated in color and in black and white. Founded in 1929, each bi-monthly issue features popular and scientific articles about cacti and other succulent plants, as well as horticultural instruction, new plant species, research and conservation reports, travelogues, biographical and historical material, and book reviews. The very rare volume I with articles by Arthur D. Houghton, L H Bailey, G.H. Frick of the major experts on the cactus and succulents. Most articles are for the devotee of the unusual forms (including some recently discovered examples) of the collectors and museum officials. One in Volume 2 is by Margaret E. Wise whose style was shaped by devoting herself to how to see examples afresh. Jacolyn Manning M.D. wrote "On Conservation of Water in the Southwest and Desert Garden". Eric Walther wrote "Notes from the Huntington Botanical Garden". (The Huntington has both volumes in their library). Bound in green linen, spines lettered in gilt, volume two with damp staining to lower and upper corners penetrating only to endpaper. A very nice set of this important work.
