George Philip & Son, LTD. London, 1922. Quarto. Item #029985

The large map edited by Sir Alexander Hosie (1853-1925) whose service for Britain was in many of the provinces of China. He travelled in the most remote dangerous places where brigands and disease took the lives of missionaries, adventurers, and trade officials. First, he wrote Three Years in Western China (1889). From dealing with river pirates and the Boxer Rebellion, he continued his work. After his retirement, he edited existing geographical studies to produce Phllip's Commercial Map of China which DNB notes is "the authoritative economic map of China, a work of great accuracy and research". A very good copy of the original cloth-backed map with none of the tears on the folds of the 30 panels. often found on this map. It measures 147 x 100 cm or 4.59'. x 3.28' . Bound in is the index to the locations. Bound in orange cloth lettered in black, silk ribbon ties present. Some soiling and wear to binding. Very scarce in this condition.
