London; (1995): Victor Gollancz. First UK Edition. Octavo. Item #029201

413 pages. The book was released in the US under the title Evolution's Shore. The book is about a meteorite that crashes in Tanzania and begins to create an alien spread zone outwards from the crash site, where people, wildlife and objects begin changing in bizarre ways. At the same time, one of Jupiter's moons disappears, an alien spacecraft begins to head towards Earth. An Irish journalist is sent to investigate the phenomenon, and her life is changed forever. This book explores themes of technological change in developing countries, alien first contact (the plantlike alien zone seems to be somewhat sentient, and may be connected to the incoming spacecraft), post colonialism, the UN as a force of help or harm, etc. A thought-provoking book! A fine bright copy bound in rust cloth, spine lettering gilt, in a fine unclipped pictorial dust jacket.
