The Ordeal of Woodrow Wilson, (Signed, Limited Edition no. 33 of 500, in the Original Slipcase)

New York; (1958): McGraw-Hlll. First Edition. Octavo. Item #029188

Limited edition of only 500 copies. The present copy is number 33 signed by Hoover. xiii, 318 pages, index, photographic images. This was the first time a former President written about one of his earlier predecessors. Since Hoover was a member of the U.S. delegation of the Paris Peace Conference, he was a close participant of the events about which he writes. What still intrigues the modern reader is how Hoover's book begins with the 1918 congressional elections and ends with the final rejection of the League of Nations by the Senate. This remains one of the most important views of that period accompanied by the broken health of an American President and what most historians regard as a narrow-minded Senate. Bound in gray cloth gilt stamped with Hoover's name in gilt, spine lettering gilt over black, gilt rules. top edge stained black. A near fine copy housed within publisher's slipcase with pastedown to front and spine, only light rubbing or fading. A handsome copy.
