Fenelon was not only an Archbishop but a writer and theologian whose writings have remained important for both Catholic and Protestant thinkers. The title is literally descriptive of their purpose and were composed by Fenelon during 1689-1697 when he was the tutor of the young Duke of Burgundy, heir to the throne of his grandfather Louis XIV. In a style not only pure and elevated but charming and intimate, Fendelon wrote his fables of beasts, men, fairies and gods. This was the third and most desirable translation by Nathaniel Gifford.. It retains the fine illustrations by Mrs. Martha Bellamy who was governess of the Young Ladies Boarding school and retains Gifford's dedication to her and has the advertisement for Mrs. Gifford's School. Bound in a 20th century off white leather, raised bands rulled in gilt, red leather spine label gilt, endpapers renewed light damp stainig to first few leaves, title page cut short when bound. A very good copy. [ESTC T63311].
