First collected edition of Cook's three voyages along with other voyages in one volume. Frontispiece of Captain Cook in the first state dated 1784, one large folding map, concluding remarks by the editor and a list of contents. (1)pp. directions to the binder, (4)pp. subscriber's list. 655pp. illustrated with full page copper engravings of maps, charts, plans, the natives, their homes and how they lived, places, animals and more by Mr. Thornton and includes the "Death of Cook" plate but Lacks #42b Instructing the Youth. Cook's voyages were undertaken in the years 1768-1780 in an effort to make discoveries in geography, navigation, astronomy etc. in the Southern and Northern Hemispheres, etc. Also included are narratives of other important voyages, Lord Byron, Captain Wallis, Capt. Carteret, Lord Mulgrave, Lord Anson, Mr. Parkinson, Mess. Ives, etc. The Hill Collection of Pacific Voyages (2nd. ed), p.7 writes: "An important compilation of English voyages, richly illustrated with engraved plates and maps". Bound in a 20th century modern speckled calf doubled ruled in gilt, raised bands with red and green leather spine labels gilt, sailing ships in gilt within four compartments, marbled endpapers renewed, frontispiece with a closed edge tear along the bottom edge, small closed tear with an earlier tape mend, a light damp staining to upper edge but not extending into the plate, Plate facing p. 165 has a closed edge tear, p. 165 has a lower corner piece torn away affecting a couple of words, small closed edge tear to p. 267, off-setting to recto of the plate from the print of p. 278, outer margins with chips to plate 'Nova Hibernia", corner torn away from plate following p. 492 with no loss, some very light occasional scattered foxing or toning. In all, a handsome copy of Anderson's important compilation of English voyages.
