vii, 451 pages. A fascinating first-hand account of the Near East with 180 intext illustrations. Much on the customs in the early 19th century and the traveler from Palestine to the depths of the desert. The chapter on the Samaritans is fascinating. The importance of hospitality (forbidding the one travelling to pay for lodging or food). His tale of an Arab woman who disgraced the family and was put to death along with her mother (the disgrace being so great) is remarkable. Among the Druze women's faces were allowed to be seen by the general public but others considered that a horrible transgression. A school prize volume given to the recipient for 1st German and 2nd music prize dated 1870. Bound in red cloth, boards double ruled in gilt with gilt decorative roll, decorative gilt spine, all edges gilt, wear to corners and spine ends, some staining to upper board edges, dark brown coated endpapers, small bookseller's ticket, upper corner of two front-end sheets with small damp stain, internally clean and bright without foxing. A very good copy.
