The Pocket Portrait Shakespeare
Glasgow; nd (ca.1899): David Bryce & Son, Octavo. Item #029025
8 volumes in four contained in a box designed to look like a book, illustrated. Copies at the Folger, British Library, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Cambridge, and the National Library of Scotland. Very rare. The Folger copy is in the Vault (C) and the notation is that it is restricted awaiting conservation and only available by special permission. A copy in the box appeared at the Anderson Gallery Auction in 1900. Books are bound in green cloth lettered and decorated in a black floral design with gilt lettering, reproduced on spines, each title with its own title pages, housed within a green cloth covered clamshell resembling a book, gilt lettering to upper board, spine lettered and decorated in a matching floral design with gilt lettering, publisher's full page label listing the contents mounted to the verso of the upper board. A very nice set with wear and old repair to the box.
