New York: Viking, 1961. First Edition. Octavo. Item #028864
Signed by the author on the half-title page. 280 pages, index, illustrated with photographic images. A thousand miles beyond the south. One of the finest accounts of the land of dark purple shadows. This work goes into areas often missed by explorers and at times he touches on the same travels as Richard Dana in "Two Years Before the Mast," and Charles Darwin in his "Voyage of the Beagle but in Matthiessen's travels, there are rich descriptions showing areas still virtually unknown which are not accessible by the modern means of travel. Bound in black cloth stamped in blind, spine lettering gilt, endpapers are maps, two corners only very minutely bumped, near fine in clipped pictorial dust jacket with some rubbing to rear joint and spine ends. A very nice copy.
