The Fell Imperial Quarto Book of Common Prayer; an Acount of Its Production

(Risbury, Herefordshire, England; 1998): Whittington Press. Limited Edition. Imperial Quarto. Item #028837

Limited to 150 copies and includes "eight pages" from the Prayer book of 1913 which according to the colophon, should have only contained four. The present copy is number 96. 32[4],33-36[37], 38-39[1], [4], 41[4]-44 pages and colophon. The Oxford University Press announced the closure of it printing house in Walton Street, Oxford in 1989. While clearing the premises, a stack of printed sheets or "quires" which should have been sent to recycling years before were used in producing this book. It was noted that the sheets were too fine to be destroyed yet they were incomplete. The book was abandoned at the outbreak of the war in August 1914. Rather than attempting to create another complete book using the Fell type and basically making a facsimile or later printing of the work, these sheets were then integrated into the present book limiting the publication to only 200 copies. Half-bound in buckram and paper printed with a selection of Fell ornaments. The text leaves are a beige color while the leaves from the prayer book are bright white. A fine copy housed in a fine publisher's slipcase.
