Portrait frontispiece, xii, 292 pages includes the map of Livingstone's Watershed and New Sources of the Nile. Besides his early observations on the sources of the Nile, his writings on the slave trade (p. 268-292 made this an important contribution despite some of the earlier references of the incipient racism in England. The author is also known as the husband of Mrs. Beeton whose cookbooks became the best-selling of its era. As a publisher, he had also secured the first UK rights to Uncle Tom's Cabin which brought about his early fortune. Bound in brown pictorial gilt cloth lettered in gilt, spine gilt, light blue endpapers. A very good copy with soiling to covers.
