Engraved frontispiece, engraved title page and regular title page. 188 pages, index. ads. Each plate has imprint dated 1799. Beginning in the mid-1790's Cooke began publishing these small volumes so gentlement could carry them about and read them at lunch on in their carriage. This item on imagined Chinese philsopher, residing in London, to his friends in the country. In a sense he was using the same kind of humor that Voltiare used with Candide, and the work brought many a smile to those in England though the imagined punishments and thinkers of China was largely in the mind of Goldsmith. From the library of Benjamin Dickinson, Esq. of Tiverton with his bookplate. Bound in full tree calf, spine rough and with an old glue repair to foot. Toning to title pages, internally clean.
