Color frontispiece, engraved title page (in color) and regular title page, 415 pages, with fifteen beautiful hand colored full-page portraits of the remarkable women of Napoleon's court. The Cosmopolitan Art Journal in November 1856 was able to see an advance copy of this book which was limited to only 5,000 copies with a production cost of $30,000. The hand-colored illustrations are from original, life-like portraits in the Gallery of the Versailles. Bound in a heavily embossed brown morocco, upper, and lower boards centrally stamped in gilt with the N (Napoleon) and crown above, raised bands, with tile gilt, other compartments stamped in blind, marbled end papers, with closed tear to front free endpaper, all edges gilt, a few scuff marks with light wear to corners. A lovely copy.
