San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1974. Limited Edition. Folio. Item #028710

Limited to 425 copies for members of the book Club of California. A census of those copies recorded in the British Isles and North America. Reports from the great libraries of the world in the (pages 41-45) show that even the greatest libraries in the UK and US are all lacking at least one leaf (e.g., British Museum, Cambridge, Oxford, NYPL), One of the most important parts of the New Testament (Acts 16:27b-18:21), beginning with the Philippian jailer who is restrained from suicide by Paul's assurance the prisoners had not escaped, followed by the jailer's question about salvation and Paul's admonition to believe. Chapter 17 is Paul's discussion on Mars Hill with the philosophers of Athens; namely, the Stoics and Epicureans, while the Bereans searched the Scriptures. The passage concludes with Priscilla and Aquilla asking Paul not to leave but he is concerned for the struggling believers in Jerusalem. There still does not appear to have a single library with a prefect edition (the 1975 facsimile had to print from other incomplete copies). One of the most desirable copies with the rare dust jacket still intact. Bound in 1/4 black cloth over red cloth lettered and illustrated in black, spine lettering gilt. A fine copy in very good dust jacket with a few chips and nicks. The leaf itself has some staining.
