London: Printed for J. Booth, 1815. Octavbo. Item #028571

Third edition. Folding map frontispiece, 2 folding panoramic views depicting Waterloo, xcviii, (1)-112pp. Lt. Col. John Booth not only provided very early first hand accounts of the Battle of Waterloo but provided a map and two folding panoramic sketches depicting Waterloo which became the basis for many of the military paintings. By issuing his early accounts of what happened at Waterloo, he issued later editions after the 1st and 2nd which had several omissions. It is this 3rd edition with the map that is the most interesting. By comparing the 2nd edition (which is online), it is possible to see his early editing in the first year it was issued. Here are two examples: Booth p. xxxix omits the footnote from the first two editions "The horse on which the Prince Regent presented to Marshal Blucher, and on which the gallant Veteran place so high a value, was killed under him during the late battle." p. xlviii he notes that the letter [is now only an extract" and that it was from an officer to his friend in Cumberland and was written from "The Camp of Clichy, July 20", and omits the five opening lines which are of a personal nature. The next four pages from xlvii to xli are changed radically. These deep recensions are of items that were presented in the 2nd edition with detail. p. lxxx-xcviii entitled "Military and Biographical Notices of the Fallen Military Heroes" is entirely missing from the earlier editions. Bound in a modern 20th century paneled leather binding ruled in gilt and blind, raised bands with compartments decorated in gilt, red leather spine label gilt, warping to boards (bound too tightly). A very nice copy.
