510 pages, limited to 500 copies signed by the author, Illustrated by F.C. Yohn. As a Southern suffragette, she also had to lessen some of her other liberal views (such as depicting the horrors of slavery). Her father was a major in the Confederate artillery and she was also a kinswoman of Confederate general Joseph E. Johnston under whom her father served at Vicksburg. This novel rooted in Jeffersonian Virginia captures the Southern attitudes and how the Union was not as important as the state. Even Margaret Mitchell felt inadequate to describe the South's tragic and romantic heritage after reading Johnston's The Long Roll. In Jones' Tomorrow is Another Day, she is quoted: "I felt so childish and presumptuous for even trying to write about that period when she had done it so beautifully, so powerfully--better than anyone can ever do it, no matter how hard they try". Her writing in Lewis Rand has evoked ides later picked up by Gore Vidal. Bound in brown cloth, paper spine label. A near fine copy with just a few scratches to spine.
