London/New York: William Heinemann/John Lane, 1905. First Edition. Octavo. Item #028459
. Engraved portrait frontispiece of the author who also wrote The Garden of Kama and Stars of the Desert. 92pp. Although her pen name "Laurence Hope" is used, the frontispiece has a picture of the author whose name was Adele Florence. After her husband's death in 1904, she committed suicide. Thomas Hardy had written a preface to the book, but it was never included but published by the family posthumously. Her writing captured both the exoticism and the veiled eroticism she saw in India. Bound in 3/4 dark blue polished calf over blue cloth, flat spine lettered and decorated in gilt and red flowers, top edge gilt, light rubbing to joints. A very nice copy.
