[Burton, Michigan]: Subterranean Press, 2008. Limited Edition. Octavo. Item #028385

469 pages limited to 1000 copies signed by the author, the present copy is number 178 and translated by Lucia Graves. One of the great Spanish works of genius in the early 21st Century. Sadly, the author died at age 55 in 2019. The Planeta Publishing House noted that this was the second-most-successful Spanish novel after Cervantes' Don Quixote. Stephen King wrote: "If you thought the true Gothic novel had died in the 19th century, this book will change your mind..... a novel full of cheesy splendor and creaking trapdoors, a novel where even the subplots have subplots." His genius takes us back to the back streets of Barcelona wherein lies the Cemetery of Lost Books - a mausoleum for out-of-print works, salvaged by the bibliophiles of the city. There, 10-year-old Daniel Sempere discovers a book called The Shadow of the Wind, by Julián Carax, which captures his young imagination. But when he investigates this unknown author, he finds out that he is the last surviving copy, as a mysterious figure called Laín Coubert has dedicated himself to eradicating Carax's work completely. But in Carax's book, Laín Coubert is the name of the Devil. A fine copy bound in rust cloth, spine lettering in copper, in a fine unclipped pictorial dust jacket. A superb copy.
