Contrary Pleasure

New York; (1954): Appleton-Century-Crofts. First Edition. Octavo. Item #028352

291 pages. Benjamin Delevan, the oldest brother, heads the family and its textile business and at 50 is nagged by the notion that the "good years and the taut muscles" have gone- but where? Quinn, in his late thirties finds a certain rejuvenation with a girl in the office. Alice, his twin, after 14 years of marriage and a sense of restless inadequacy, finds a new and never known vitality in her relationship with her husband. Brock, Ben's son, has been bounced out of college for stealing money and Ellen, his sister, straightens out on her own. One of his better tales outside the mystery suspense genre. Bound in green paper covered boards, spine lettering yellow, some fading to spine ends and edges, minor minute bump to upper corner, from the library of Adrian Homer Goldstone, with his bookplate, an avid collector from California who is particularly well known for his bibliographies of Arthur Machen and John Steinbeck, both of which were published through the University of Texas. In an unclipped green dust jacket lettered and decorated in white, red, yellow, green, and brown, spine lettering white and yellow, chipping to spine ends and corners, wear to edges. A very good copy.
