The Life of Thomas Jefferson, 3 Volume Set

Philadelphia: Lipppincott, 1888. Octavo. Item #028318

In three volumes. 645, 694 and 731pp. Volumes one and two have double frontispieces. and are in near fine condition lacking the chips that normally occurred during the course of reading the books. As Andrew Burstein has written, it was the voluminous writing of Thomas Jefferson that forced biographers from Andrew Draper to Henry S. Randall to take over the task of reading. Col. T.J. Randolph, Jefferson's grandson, wrote to Randall in great detail on Jefferson's last hours (III, 543-544). One of the sources with much from Jefferson's family. Bound in brown cloth, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, dark brown coated endpapers, previous owner's bookplate of Delight B. Butts, who was a research assistant at the teacher's college Columbia University. And an embossed stamp H.O.W. (Harold O. White and another owner's stamp to title pages J.W. Champlin. Light wear to front hinge of volume three and light rubbing to joints. A very handsome set, near fine.
