Limited to only 300 copies with a 4-page prospectus laid in. Original leaf inserted from the Book of Job from the first edition of the King James Bible./ Letterpress printed in red and black./ Lowes' work is reprinted from his Essays in appreciation./ "Three hundred copies of this book have been printed for the Book Club of California by the Grabhorn Press"--Colophon./This passage is from the Book of Job with one of the great passages on the purpose of suffering (Job 23:10) "But he knoweth the way I take; when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as pure gold." 4 ornamental initial beautifully hand-illuminated in red, blue, and gold done by Valenti Angelo (though not noted in the bibliographic information). Printed in hand-set Franciscan Type. Original leaf inserted following p. xvi. The extended context of the passage has Eliphaz exhortation to Job to repentance. Original announcement is laid in. Upon close examination we see the insertion of words in roman type versus the black letter which is a major part of the text. Often this was done to reduce font size. Bookplate: Martin Mitau (1900-1973) and Marjorie (nee Fleishhacker) Mitau (1906-1983) were both San Franciscans. Their collection was strong in fine printing. Their bookplate shows a European outdoor bookmarket with collectors in search of the next work for their collection. Bound in 1/4 beige cloth over paper covered boards. 4a few small spots of foxing to covers. A very good copy.
