The Letters of Robert Louis Stevenson (5 Volume set)

London; (1924): Prentice Hall. Small Octavo. Item #028262

In five volumes. The remarkable friendship between Robert Louis Stevenson and Sidney Colvin is one of the great friendships that began before RLS was published and when the rare engravings in Colvin's trust were stolen, RLS loaned him money (since he was now a successful published author on his own). When Stevenson thought, his illness would soon lead to his death he gave his unpublished letters and papers to Colvin who initially published them as the Vailima Letters. In this edition, the previously unpublished letters were included, and it was known as the Tusitla edition (this was the name the Samoan natives had given him). Bound in blue linen, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, some rubbing to bindings, off-setting to endpapers from binder's glue. A very good set.
