High Spots of American Literature,

New York: Bennet Studios, 1929. Limited Edition. Octavo. Item #028196

Limited to 750 copies. 114pp. The present copy is number 366. Published just before the Stock Market Crash of 1929, the author analyzed the most essential American first editions with descriptive bibliography. While it has Louise May Alcott's Little Women, it also has William Beebe's Jungle Peace [the true first does not have the Theodore Roosevelt introduction], with key items by Willa Cather, Robert Frost, Mark Twain as well as important writers who are often not listed in collector's lists such as Morgan Robertson (Where Angels Fear to Tread), Hamlin Garland's (Pioneer Mother), and many fine writers often overlooked today. If you were a serious collector in the period before 1950, Merle Johnson was the Bible for collectors. Today, many will prefer Ahearn but few will take the time to present in detail why a book was important. A fine bright copy bound in the original blue three-quarter Turkey Morocco over marbled boards with matching endpapers. raised bands lettered and ruled in gilt top edge gilt.
