London: Thomas Allman, 1850. 12mo. Item #028151

Portrait frontispiece, half-title, lvi, 199 pages, engraved vignette title page and regular title page. The author's fame was as a Bishop of Calcutta who tried to bridge the gap between the fervent evangelicals and the high church group which preferred a very staid approach to religion. He followed the principles of Jeremy Taylor and in hymnography created music to many of the great English hymns including: "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty". He was concerned especially with the caste system which was present in the church in south India but died before being able to bridge that gulf (DNB, 2006) A very good copy bound in publisher's brown cloth pictorially stamped in gilt depicting the author, spine fully gilt decorated, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers. [OCLC notes that a copy of this new edition is at St. Marks Theological Center in Australia.
