St. Nicotine of the Peace Pipe
London: George Routledge and Sons, 1909. First Edition. Octavo. Item #028090
Frontispiece, xvii, 197 pp. With full page plates and 5 text cuts. A veteran devotee at the shrine of St Nicotine he claimed a foremost place among Victorian smokers. Morning, noon and night, in season, and, as many thought out of season, he might be found ensconced in some quiet nook, or perched on a wall, diligently like a devout Parsee keeping the sacred fire aglow, and drawing inspiration from the spiral wreaths as they ascended heavenwards. This was an age where the addiction was considered a benefit and most laughed at those who claimed smoking to be an unhealthy addiction. Bound in brown cloth, lettered and decorated in blind, spine lettering gilt. A very nice, clean copy.
