After a long military career with service in the 29th regiments, the 24th during the Second Anglo-Sikh War, he then served with King's Royal Rifle corps and he held the rank of Major until his death in 1889. Besides this major reference work, he also published Monumental Inscriptions of the British West Indies. An ex-library copy with their stamp, rebound in 3/4 red leather over red cloth centrally stamped in gilt depicting a royal coat of arms, raised bands gilt decorated, lettering and top edge gilt, endpapers renewed, light toning to pages. A very nice copy.
