New York; : Grosset & Dunlap. Octavo. Item #028004
. 270pp., 10 pp. publisher's catalog. Grosset and Dunlap reprint which has rare photograph of Dashiell Hammett on back of jacket. This is one of his most important novels basing the murders that took place after the Butte strike. It introduces Continental Op as the special private detective. As was typical, Hammett identified with the conditions of the working man. It was these and other social concerns that led him to join the Communist Party and later become hounded by HUAC. The reprint is from Knopf's 3rd edition. Bound in red cloth red lettering blocked in black, previous owner's name dated 1932, closed edge tears and tiny chips along folds and spine ends. Very good.
