Charles Hutton was a leading mathematician at the end of the 18th century whose calculations were highly regarded especially his study on the theory of bridges. This is Volume I of a set that was to include his work on gunpowder. The Dictionary of National Biography notes: "the entries on engineering are particularly valuable". Bound in 3/4 calf over paper covered boards, flat spine with lettering and rules in gilt, corners worn, light damp stain to upper edge of frontispiece does not affect the engraving, text is very clean. A very good copy.
