Portrait frontispiece, xxiv, 510pp. and ccix(concerning plates and index) 75 engravings by William Tipping, folded maps. William Tipping traveled to Palestine to make some of the finest engravings of the Holy Land and to see the geographical setting as Josephus new it. Not only is Robert Traill's translation as a vast improvement over Whiston's but the publisher has produced the cleanest easily read text compared with the cheap early issues which seem to flood the market. The publishers Houston and Wright made this their finest edition issued in a very small issue with the deluxe binding. Bound in full maroon morocco pictorial stamped in gilt and blind, spine fully gilt decorated, inner gilt denteels, original binder’s ticket to front pastedown (Westley the Promenade Cheltenham)all edges gilt, small chip to head, upper board just a bit bowed. An exceptionally nice copy.
