London: Martin Hopkinson, 1928. Limited Edition. Large Octavo. Item #027551
Limited to only 1500 copies. 402 pages, index. with folding map after the index. When Anson's book appeared in the 18th century, it became a bestseller. The disasters Anson faced were disclosed and led to major reforms in the British Navy. The voyage lasted three years and nine months including the rounding of Cape Horn, a coastal route to Acapulco, a visit to China and then home through the Sundra Straits and round the Cape of Good Hope. Anson's early maps still showed California as an island (see our copy in the shop) as the maps show. The story is fascinating and was printed in a very small print run. This is a very bright copy bound in 1/4 dark blue cloth over blue paper covered boards centrally stamped in gilt, spine and top edge gilt, a few spots of foxing to page edges. Very nice.
