142 pages. Issued as House Document/19th Congress, 2nd session, 57. One of the most scarce of early 19th century documents. Copies are found at only four institutions: West Point, the American Antiquarian Society, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Texas. Scott had served under Presidents Andrew Jackson all the way to Abraham Lincoln. He had studied French military tactics in 1815-1816 and then wrote a three volume work in 1835. It was in 1837 he expanded to the topics of cavalry tactics while he was Major General and President of the Board of Officers of the Army. It is noted in a footnote on page 5 that at this time the carbine (or short rifle) is recommended. Here is a small key on a change moving beyond the sword and pistol. The Table of Contents on pages 139-142 enable the reader to find intricate details on maneuvers, positions while mounted or unmounted as well as training of the horse. Bound in a modern green cloth binding lettered in gilt.
