Appleton announced the series "Library of Wonders" in 1870 (the book was copyrighted in 1869) and became the major introduction on science topics to the general public. It was this author who had translated Jules Verne's first book: "Five Weeks in a Balloon" the previous year that brought Verne's name into prominence in America.A very good copy bound in red pictorial gilt cloth, spine gilt, small nicks to cloth near upper edge of front board and lower edge, spine ends with some chipping, a couple of spots of staining, interior fine without foxing or names.
