New York: Neale Publishing, 1906. First Edition. Octavo. Item #027490
486 pages. Lee's time as President of Washington College (later Washington and Lee) left him little time to write his memoirs. Rev. Jones had already written the marvelous book With Christ in the Camp which describes the intense religious devotion on both sides of the Civil War but here he shows Lee in the best light possible. While some of claimed Jones was on the side of hagiography, many agree there is much here on Robert E. Lee that is of great value. He did assiduously read his letters and spoke with those who knew him. The pages on Gettysburg alone are worth careful reading. Bound in gray/black cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt, rubbing to edges, previous owner's bookplate. An exceptionally nice copy. [Nevins, II, 68.].
