New York: Century Co., 1901. Octavo. Item #027437
297 pages, 3rd edition, expanded to add his lectures on U.S. Grant, Admiral Dewey, the American character, brotherhood and the heroic virtues and finally on the duties of an American. These additions emphasize a life of service based on virtue not an opportunity to gain status or wealth. Of course, he had the latter but it was his character and exercise of virtue that makes this a key item for the Teddy Roosevelt library. Bound in light brown cloth, brown leather spine label gilt rubbed with a few tiny nicks, top edge gilt, corners lightly bumped, previous owner’s gift inscription dated 1901. A very good copy.
