Stanley and Livingston

Chicago; (1918): Stanton and Van Vliet. Octavo. Item #027400

310 pages. 100 illustrations. As this Chicago publisher succeeded the publishing house of Charles C. Thompson in 1917, they begin to publish books on Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson. They found there was a fascination about Henry M. Stanley's search and finding David Livingston. They separated as partners in 1922 with C.H. Van Vliet continuing to publish many titles through 1925. As more and more Americans were able to read, books on famous heroes were in demand. The front cover of the book declares it is "Stanley's Story or through the wilds of Africa". Chapter 5 tells of Stanley's last travels until he meets Livingston which is one of the best told stories of the great saga of the meeting of the two men. Bound in beige pictorial cloth lettered and decorated in green and dark brown, some fraying to spine ends, covers have foxing or soiling, wear through to corners. A good copy.
