Report Upon the Colorado River of the West; Explored in 1857 and 1858

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1861. Quarto. Item #027393

. 2 large folding maps and profile plan, 31 plates (including 7 in color of Indians) and several folding line drawings and textual woodcuts. While one of the most important and best illustrated army surveys of the American West, the report according to Goetzmann is the best of the individual army reports where Reese noted has: "a long, carefully written journal, consciously literary but with a maximum amount of attention to scientific observation." Wheat acclaims the maps as first rate. Certainly the most important early work on the Colorado. Bound in original pictorial gilt dark brown cloth, rebacked with the orginal spine laid down, endpapers renewed, marginal scattered foxing or finger smudges. A very good copy. [Wagner-Camp 375; Goetzmann, pp. 379-94; Wheat, Trans-Mississippi West 947; Flake 4287; Howes I92].
