London; No Date [ca.1860]: Dean & Sons. Small Quarto. Item #027353

Eight hand-colored engravings all with moveable parts. These moveable images are operated through paper tabs and show the poem This is the house that Jack Built. (1) Jack in his house--his right hand is missing; (2) the Malt being eaten by the rat--the tab is present not attached as the rat's head is missing; (3) The Cat that worried the rat; (4)The dog that worried the cat; (5) The cow with the crumpled horn that tossed the dog that worried the cat; (6) The man all tattered and torn that courted the Maiden all forlorn; (7) The priest all shaven and shorn; (8) The cock that crowed to wake the Priest; Copies are found at the Morgan Library, the University of Virginia, Columbia University and Washington University. Though Dean & Sons published in the period from 1859 to the end of the century, because of the cost of producing hand moveable books, they ended by them by the late 1860's. Even of the rare copies that have survived, most have had some degree of restoration. Bound in 1/4 dark blue cloth over color pictorial paper covered boards, rear endsheets are orange publisher's ads. Boards rubbed, wear to corners and edges. Very scarce.
