194 pages, (10)pp. ads at rear, index. Tyndall had already become a great friend of Joseph Henry and Louis Agassiz so these lectures on heat had his latest adjustments. He had not originally planned to publish these early findings but the opportunity came from Appleton's Intellectual Scientific Series. Pages 184-194 have his speech at the farewell banquet to his audience of scientists and celebrities. He received $23,000 in lecture fees (a huge amount at the time) which he donated for the promotion of scientific studies in America. Bound in brown cloth paneled in black with corner flourishes, spine lettering gilt, wear through to corners and spine ends, yellow endpapers of which one had been clipped along upper corner, light rubbing along joints. A very good copy.
