329 pages, index. The author was Professor of Geology and Paleontology at the University of Michigan. He takes a position of Theistic Evolution as many Christian scholars did before the Fundamentalist-Modernist era in the early 20th century. He concludes there is an overall plan of an omnipotent and omniscience Being (p. 311). His book Adamites and Preadamites: or, A Popular Discussion (1878) showed also he had a racist interpretation which even at the time was considered troubling. Bound in decorative brown cloth accented in black and gilt, spine lettering gilt, rear inner hinge just starting. A very nice copy.
