After receiving his degree from Genesee University (later Syracuse University), he became an expert on woods and was devoted to education but 1870 he began to become one of the most important land owners of great untapped forest lands in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Northwest he writes about are the beautiful forests in the Upper Midwest.
