Measures 7 3/4" x 8 1/2". Customs Declaration. Signed as Surveyor. Using his political connections, Hawthorne, according to his own statement, ….was appointed surveyor of the Salem Custom House on April 9, 1846. He admitted to Longfellow that this he dreamed of stories to write but his work at the Port of Salem brought him a salary of $1200 which was considerable in that day. His tenure was abruptly terminated by removal on June 7 1849. He now returned to writing and in 1850, published The Scarlet Letter.
